Fatal fire, Edinburgh

A 37-year-old man has died after being rescued by firefighters from a fire in a block of flats at Restalrig Road in Edinburgh in the early hours of the morning (4 March).

Another man, aged 64, was rescued from the property and taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

The alarm was raised minutes before 4am by a police officer who noticed smoke issuing from the second floor window of a flat.

A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said:

“We were called to a report of smoke coming from a second floor flat on Restalrig Road at 03.54am.

“Tragically a 37 year old man who was removed from the property was pronounced dead. A man aged 64 was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary suffering from smoke inhalation.

“There were 27 firefighters at the scene, six firefighters in breathing apparatus used a high-pressure hose reel to extinguish the blaze. An investigation into the cause of the fire is now underway.”

  1. High praises to the policeman that alerted the remaining residents in the other flats if not for him I dread to think what could have happened to us. The paramedics worked for ages trying hard to revive Michael, so sad he was such a nice guy that was pleasant and always asked how you were. All the rescue people involved done all they could for everyone, but cant thank and praise the policeman that noticed the smoke…..our hero.

    • Thanks Carol, it’s a very sad outcome but certainly the quick actions of the police officer ensured the alarm was raised and we could be mobilised to the incident. It will have been a distressing event for all involved.

  2. Sorry Read about the two males involved in the house fire in Restaglia road Edinburgh pass my wholehearted Condolinces to the family of the bereved and my thoughts are with the guys who brought the male out of the house
