Elderly woman taken to hospital with burns after blast at house in East Lothian

Around 20 firefighters attended a report of an explosion at a single storey semi-detached property in East Lothian this afternoon (4 January).

The alarm was raised to Carberry Court at Whitecraig in Musselburgh shortly before 1pm. When crews arrived there was evidence of an explosion and the roof at the front and rear of the building had collapsed. The property was deemed unsafe and fire crews began evacuating people from neighbouring properties as a precaution.

A team of firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and using a line of hose extinguished a fire within the building and confirmed there was no-one inside the property. An elderly woman, believed to be 82 years old, was treated at the scene for burns to her hands and lower arms. She was transferred to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for further medical attention.

Firefighters isolated gas and electricity supplies at the property for safety and liaised with utility companies and East Lothian Council who were also in attendance at the incident. An investigation into the cause of the blast is underway.
